Overal Rating: 7 NOPA

Address: 560 Divisadero Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 (Map)

NOPA

NOPA, like the city of San Francisco, is a study in duality. Both are cutting edge yet firmly rooted in the past. This is reflected in the contrast between the restaurant's sleek yet rustic design and masterfully prepared food. The intent at NOPA is to find and procure only the freshest and most seasonal ingredients and serve them in a manner that only enhances their quality. The restaurant is a welcomed addition to its namesake, North of the Panhandle neighborhood, as it has been extremely popular since opening in 2006. The bar is urbane without being fussy, the food is complex yet simply prepared, and the service is precise without being intrusive.

Overal Rating: 8 Salt House

Address: 545 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94105 (Map)

Salt House

If you’re searching for contemporary American fare, look no further than the Salt House. This tavern is housed in an old printing press warehouse from the 1930’s and is equal parts new and old, merging the best of both. The building stays true to its historic charm with original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, tall ceilings with massive metal support beams, and 12 foot windows—all the better to look in or out of. Salt House is more than just an impressive space though, and true to its “gastropub” label, serves up hearty yet refined ingredient-driven cuisine in a tavern-like atmosphere.

Overal Rating: 6 Straits

Address: 845 Market Street, Ste. 597, San Francisco, CA 94103 (Map)

Straits

Sleek and sultry Straits restaurant and lounge gives the weary shopper a sexy little break from the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco shopping scene. East and West intertwine in Chef/Owner Chris Yeo's Singaporean fusion cuisine, inspired by Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Indonesian flavors, and featuring traditional fare such as Singapore Satay Sticks and savory spiced Roti Prata. For another flavorful option, mint and fragrant saffron cultivate a zesty Rack of Lamb that slides right off the bone, rolling onto the tongue in a culmination of satisfaction. Slow things down with a ginger-infused cocktail to finish the courses off.

Overal Rating: 6 Mangarosa

Address: 1548 Stockton Street, San Francisco, CA 94133 (Map)

Mangarosa

Traditional Italian fare gets a true pick-me-up of Brazilian vitality in the fine and festive cuisine served at Mangarosa. The menu, like the décor, is a sophisticated yet playful expression of fusion identity, and it complements the spirit of Carnival found in every corner of the space. The sleek interior of the restaurant boasts massive pillars that support great arches; and a color scheme of rich neutrals and vibrant tones creates a warm and exhilarating mood. Diners may be seduced by menu items like the Foie Gras and the Grilled Prawns Risotto, and the impressive Brazilian steak selection is sure to entice.
