Chez Spencer
Address: 82 14th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103Owner and Chef Laurent Katgely, formerly of the Mission’s prominent Foreign Cinema, has created a unique dining experience in a deceivingly large updated industrial space. Heated patio seating in the front is nestled in a sheltered garden of olive trees and fragrant flowers and herbs. And there is even a sandbox off to the side for the little ones to entertain themselves while you feast. The menu pays homage to Katgely’s native France while staying true to the California trend of using the freshest seasonal ingredients in specialties like the Bouillabaise, Sauteed Veal Sweetbreads, and Wood-Grilled Filet Mignon with truffle butter.

La Ciccia
Address: 291 30th Street, San Francisco, CA 94131Taste another side of Italy at La Ciccia, where the flavors of the island of Sardinia take center stage. Husband and wife team, Massimiliano Conti and Lorella Degan, introduce patrons to the tastes of their home land, and retain authentic cooking styles and ingredients. The Fregua cun Cozzasa e Zaffaranu is a fregula with mussels in a tomato sauce with San Gavino saffron, and the Pezza de Angioni cun Tuvara is a seared lamb tenderloin with mushrooms. Over a quarter of the Italian-centric wine list is devoted exclusively to Sardinia labels, and the earthy tones of the drink selections only compliment the complexities of the cuisine.
