Luella

Well worth the detour, this stylish neighborhood eatery is tucked away on a tree-lined block in Russian Hill. Run “mom and pop” style, owner/chef Ben de Vries reigns over the kitchen while his wife, Rachel Lewis de Vries, oversees the dimly lit dining room. Hues of green and rust wash over everything from the walls to smaller accents such as the hanging drum-shaped lamps, giving the busy interior a warm and soothing ambiance. The rotating Mediterranean-inspired menu highlights the season’s freshest ingredients, and boasts specialties such as the Coca-Cola Braised Pork Shoulder and Strawberry and Crème Fraîche Tart with red wine syrup for dessert.

Rivoli

Address: 1539 Solano Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94707 (Map)

Rivoli

Chef and Owner Wendy Brucker and Owner and General Manager Roscoe Skipper are the dynamic duo behind Rivoli, in Berkeley. They met, wed, and plunged into the world of restaurant success in 1994, with fresh and earthy fare that strikes a balance between unique combinations and traditional techniques. The “secret garden” lures patrons in, and the healthful and satisfying cuisine keeps them coming back. Dishes like the Saffron and Pimenton Risotto and the Pan Roast Chicken are quite memorable, but with a seasonal menu that changes every three weeks there is always something new to try, and love.

Eos

Address: 901 Cole Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 (Map)

Eos

Eos of Cole Valley prides itself on its unique variety of California and Asian-Fusion dishes. With a dark interior filled with décor from both sides of the Pacific, it would appear that the food is not the only fusion in this dual cultured restaurant. Named after the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology, Eos presents itself not only as a restaurant, but also as a wine bar with a worldly and varied list of fine wines. Only the freshest ingredients from local farms are allowed in the dishes that Eos serves to its hungry customers. With such a fresh start, it should come as no surprise that this restaurant offers many options for vegetarians. The Seven Course Tasting Menu is an example of this, with one option featuring a very meaty entrée and the other with meatless courses. Their A La Carte menu is similarly divided, with vegetarian options such as the Fried Quinoa, featuring tofu, and the Thai Basil Gnocchi to name only a few. Carnivores will appreciate the Tea Smoked Duck Breast and the Grilled Angus Hanger Steak. Whether there to appreciate the wine or the distinctive spin on the many food options, Eos is sure to leave a few impressions.
